A portable digital speed display trailer is currently set up near WHS to remind drivers of their speeds and to slow down.

The display has been positioned on Sixth Street by the Sioux Falls Police Department for the first weeks of school, but will be relocated to another spot around the school soon. The purpose is to remind drivers that they are in a school zone and to help them compare their speedometer to the speed that they are actually going.

Officer Hank Bayne said he believes the display will help keep drivers under the speed limit and make them be aware of the school zones.

“The main purpose of the speedometer is to help drivers understand that they are in a school zone and they need to be aware of any children around,” Bayne said.

Junior Kyla Kemp said she thinks that there is no need for the speedometer.

“It is unnecessary,” Kemp said. “We already have a cop around the school, and people should already be following the speed limits.”

Another violation the police department will be focusing on this school year is jaywalking.

Jaywalking is illegally crossing the street where there are no crosswalks. According to Bayne, there have been many complaints around the school of students not using crosswalks.

One big spot where students have illegally been crossing the street is from the driveway of the parking lot across Sycamore Avenue. Another place where this is a problem is at the driveway of Sixth Street. A $75 ticket can be issued for jaywalking. The city is currently looking at installing a crosswalk on Sycamore, but students need to move to an intersection with a crosswalk until that becomes a reality.
