Should Ghettopoly be allowed in stores? -
Monday, October 27, 2003 By Andrew Murray

A new board game based on the classic Parker Bros. "Monopoly" has caused an uproar recently. The new "Ghettopoly" stereotypes African American culture and has many African American leaders outraged.
The game, released in Urban Outfitters clothing stores in Philadelphia, is also available online for purchase for $29.95. African American leaders want the game banned and in addition have called for a boycott of the stores that sell the game. It is also for sale on the game’s official website, www.ghettopoly.com.
This game features "Hustle" and "Ghetto Stash" draw cards as well as crack houses, projects, and ghetto-themed game pieces.
But with game board properties like "Harlem" and "The Bronx" and game pieces representing pimps, prostitutes, and guns, does this game go too far?
David Chang, the Pennsylvania native and inventor of the game, should come to his senses and realize that this game is simply unnecessary for the American youth. In today’s technological society and culture, we are filled with images and media that are already way too explicit and violent. In addition, our culture is very stereotypical: dumb blondes, rednecks, jocks, cheerleaders, druggies; this list goes on. This game only continues a way of life that isn’t positive for our youth.
Parents and teachers also work hard to try and keep students on the right path. They already worry about the type of books we read, the television we watch, and the movies we pay ridiculous prices to see. Parents and teachers do not need another tributary of inappropriate material to block off.
Similarly, when we make fun of our fellow American when they are poor, live in the worst housing conditions, and have drug problems or worry about gang violence, we should be ashamed of ourselves. Its sad even in the fact that we do it everyday. And, things like this only desensitize us to making the problem worse. This game should be discontinued and banned. This game is simply in poor taste
