The Michigan Society for Medical Research (MISMR) annually sponsors an essay dealing with biomedical research. This year the theme is, “Why animals are used in biomedical research.” The contest is open to any Michigan Middle/High School students who are interested.
The Michigan Society for Medical Research is a non-profit educational program. The mission is to promote the understanding of medical research that includes the appropriate use of animals. The program works as an out reach to promote the awareness and interest in science.
Student finalists in each school division will receive a $ 500 cash prize and plaque. Teachers will also be part in the essay. Teachers of the first place winner will also receive a prize of $100. All students who enter the contest will receive a certificate of participation. Honorable mentions in each school division will also be awarded. The winning essays will be published in a special booklet and winners will get the chance to attend the MISMR meeting in 2004.
Biomedical research has accomplished a lot in the last couple decades. You can thank biomedical research for vitamins, control of diabetes, and the awareness and better understanding of leukemia and different types of cancer. The essay will be judged on the originality, creativity, and the demonstration that an effort was used to get a better understanding on why animals are used in biomedical research. The idea is up to you as long as it goes along with the theme. Some given ideas were how animal research helps environmental protection and the laws and regulations governing the use of animals.
