Recently, on Thursday May 19, 2007, The Business & Finance Academy class of 2008 went to the Huntington Library for a tribute to Langston Hughes called “Ask Your Momma.”

When we arrived we were given an introduction as to what the tribute would be about. A woman read 6 out of 12 moods from Ask Your Momma. After her poetry it was time for the youth to share some of their own poetry. Austin Daniels read his own original poem called “I Wish That They Wasn’t.” We were all very intrigued and astonished at the meaning of his poem. “My poem expressed obstacles that my friends and I have overcome from the past to now,” Austin said when we asked him what inspired him to write this poem. After the presentation the juniors were very supportive of Austin and concluded that Austin had the best poem that had been recited. It was an eye-opening experience and we were very proud that our classmate had written such an inspiring poem.
