In Southern California, 25 percent of all drivers do not have insurance. Most of these drivers don’t have insurance because it’s expensive, according to Law for Kids. State average insurance premiums are about $2,185.97 per year, according to Auto Insurance Center.

“I don’t have insurance because I don’t have the money,” said a Venice student William Martinez, who drives to school.

Teenagers are a big part of the 25 percent. Teenagers get in more car accidents than adults, so car insurance is even more important.

The State of California is very strict about having car insurance. If you’re caught without insurance for the first time, you will be given a $400 ticket and will have to go to court. In court, the judge has the right to suspend your license for a year.

If you are caught a second time, which is rare, the fine will be higher and will total around $800. Most of the time on your first offense, they suspend the license until you get your insurance.
