The comical parody, “The Little Shop Of Horrors,” will soon be hitting the stage at Venice High for the third time, directed by drama teacher Traci Nichols Thrasher and choreographed by Venice alum Lawrence Hatcher. Vocal director Wendy Kornbeck, musical director Reesa Jones and technical advisor Fabian Rodriguez, a junior, are also helping produce the play.

The musical is centered in a downtown florist shop on Skid Row owned by Mr. Mushnick. Seymour, the incompetent florist’s assistant who is constantly making a mess of things, develops a plant that is very much similar to a Venus Flytrap. In this once rundown flower shop, Seymour discovers that the plant will die if not fed the flesh and blood of humans.

The plant is named after Seymour’s love interest and coworker, Audrey, who is dating an abusive dentist, Dr. Orin, but is secretly passionately in love with Seymour. The plant, Audrey II demands that Seymour bring him fresh human flesh after Seymour grows continuously weaker by being the sole provider of blood to this life form. Seymour, who is obsessed with the fame and recent success of the flower shop, hesitantly agrees.

Things soon start taking a turn for the worst as Audrey II becomes too demanding and greedy, revealing itself as an alien life form plotting to take over the world. Seymour and his colleagues are left to fearfully find a way rid themselves of this abomination.

The Little Shop of Horrors first debuted as a film in the 1960s and later as a musical on Broadway.

Auditions for the musical were held the week of Feb. 15- 18. But the theater department is still in need of crew members.

Rehearsals are held six days a week, after school until 5:30 in the auditorium and Saturdays.
