Freshman and Junior English Classes to Double in Size
Advertising

Fifteen faculty members are not going to be working here at Venice High School in September, including teachers, counselors, administrators, and cafeteria workers as a result of budget cuts. Only two out of the 15 being laid off are not leaving because of budget cuts, but are retiring.

Students will be affected because their math and English classes will increase in size. This year the ratio in 9thand 11th grade English classes is 20:1. Next year the ratio for 11th grade English classes will be 43:1. For 9th grade English classes, the ratio will be 32:1. With the stimulus package money from President Barrack Obama, Venice will be able to buy some teachers back.

Class sizes are going to increase, to decrease the number of teachers needed. Venice will also be losing three people from the custodial staff and some cafeteria workers.

LAUSD will also take away support services from Venice, which includes the pupil service attendance counselor, diploma project advisor and the career advisor.

Every area of Venice will be affected except sports and school activities. As of April 29, no cuts are expected to be made to any sports at Venice. As for the nurse, the District is only willing to pay three days out of the week. This means Venice will have to pay two days of the week out of its budget to have the nurse the other two days.

The psychologist’s time at Venice has also been reduced. Venice will also receive less money for instructional materials, which include printer cartridges, paper, pens, etc. The total will be reduced by 25%.

Next year Venice will receive $617,00 from the Title I money and $250,000 from the stimulus packet money President Obama has allocated for each school. The Title I money is the money received because of all the students who receive free and reduced lunch.

Budget cuts are not only occurring at Venice Senior High School but at all other LAUSD schools. Budget cuts began due to the lack of money the state of California has. Not only are faculty members being affected by budget cut but parents and students as well.
