New Law Banning Cell Phone Use While Driving to Be Introduced in July: Multiple Violations of Law Will Result in Fail Sentence
Advertising
On July 1st 2008 a new law will go into affect banning the use of cell phones while driving a vehicle. On September 2006 Governor Arnold Scharzenegger signed legislation that prohibits everyone under eighteen years of age from using cell phones while driving . Adult drivers are prohibited from using cell phones unless it is a hands-free device.

The increased use of cell phones while driving has raised a number of issues such as safety, security, and privacy. It has also led to many tragic deaths, which prompted this legislation.

The first time a driver violates the law, they will be fined $20. The second offense will be a fine of $50. More offenses may lead to a triple fee or a jail sentence.

This law allows adult drivers to use a wireless cellphone for emergency purposes such as 911 calls, and allows drivers of emergency response vehicles to use hands-free devices.

California will be joining Connecticut, the District of Columbia, New Jersey, New York, and some local jurisdictions on prohibiting the use of any handheld cell phones while driving a vehicle.
