The Sports Medicine Program is more than just students who pass out cups of water to athletes. These trainers are the ones behind the scenes of all the injuries in sports.

The 13 members who became trainers learned how to deal with hurt players by watching head athletic trainer Juliana Contreras wrap ankles to bandage sprains and put a bag of ice on bruises. After practice, the student learners are able to fix wounds themselves.

“The trainers learn all about anatomy, and they get community service,” Contreras said.

The Sports Medicine Program stands in the heat as teams practice games and watch to see if any injuries occur. If a player has minimal damage ,they go to Contreras’s office. There, injured players get the help they need to be cured. To check up on their injuries, student athletes can report to Contreras’s room after 1 p.m. in the afternoon

The trainers shadow every sports team except for the off campus teams, like golf and aquatic sports

“During the football games, athletes get injured the most.” Contreras said.

The purpose of the program is to teach the young trainers how to deal with injured players. Some of these medical trainers might benefit from this pursuing athletic training or if they are ever in that situation.

Whatever it is that the Sports Medicine Program does, handing out cold cups of water is the least of it. One can spot the young trainers well at work helping players stay healthy and allowing them to compete.
