Sit-Ins are a thing of the past, right? Not if you ask any Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) member. On Dec. 21, 30 orange-clad teenagers swarmed a Chili’s restaurant with a message in hand.

“We believe that just because you smoke doesn’t mean you should infringe on those wanting to breathe fresh air,” said Illka Slater, the club’s sponsor. The club protested in the smoking section of Chili’s, which was only separated from the non-smoking section with a half of a wall brick partition.

“The smoke given off by cigarettes doesn’t stop at an entry way just because the smoking section ends,” said member Danielle Hopkins. Many restaurants, including Chili’s separate the smoking and non-smoking sections, which does not prevent smoke from flowing into the non-smoking section. Although this is a valid point, the club met with some controversy from diners.

Shannan Holder, the club’s president recalled two drunken constituents trying to get the manager to kick the club out. “They said that some of our members were harassing them by telling them they need to stop smoking. We were not; we never tell anyone to stop smoking. We just give them the facts and let them decide for themselves,” she said.

Many would see the sit-in as having no purpose because of recently passed Amendment Six, which prohibits any place of business (besides stand alone bars) from allowing smoking in its domain. SWAT members view it differently. They unanimously agreed that if they accomplished nothing else from this than letting the owner know that business would not dwindle because of Amendment Six’s enactment, then it was all worth it.

As they walked out, they left a small token for the restaurant to remember them by- a pamphlet on each “smoking table” warning about the harmful effects of smoking. Message delivered.
