Fast forward 175 years. The United States of America does not exist. Neither does Canada and Mexico. A series of natural disasters, wars, and uprisings transformed the North American continent into one superpower called Panem. The Capitol city rules twelve districts with an iron fist, determining the fates of millions of citizens and twenty four teenagers. Every year, each district sends one male and one female “tribute” to a televised event where ordinary youths battle to the death for the entertainment of a nation. Welcome to the hunger games.

This isn’t Suzanne Collins first rodeo in the arena of young adult novels. Collins already wrote the Underland Chronicles and was also a screenwriter for Nickelodeon. However, her recently concluded trilogy changed her reputation. The first installment of the series, The Hunger Games, is a #1 New York Times Bestseller, USA Today Bestseller, and a Wall Street Journal Bestseller

The Hunger Games opens to the main character Katniss Everdeen, a  fatherless and troubled girl of sixteen. However, her world is shattered when the Hunger Games arrive.  As customary, one boy and one girl are chosen from her district, but when Katniss’s sister is chosen, Katniss volunteers herself to die in her place.  The reader follows Katniss on her journey to the capitol and then into the arena to fight for her life all while trying to come to terms with herself. Does Katniss ever succeed in surviving the games or her horrific future? Find out in the Hunger Games and in the rest of the trilogy, Catching Fire and Mockingjay.
