On Saturday, November 6, 2010, the varsity Teague Lady Lions had a scrimmage against Frankston. The game started off upbeat with the Lady Lions scoring the first points of the game, but about half way through the first half something terrible happened.

Sprinting down the court on a fast break Madison Watson passed the ball to KeKe Abrams who saw Ry’Nesha Brooks heading towards the basket. When Abrams passed the ball Brooks made a jump stop in preparation to shoot, but the quick stop took her to the ground in pain. The players surrounded their teammate to try to comfort her, but her face said it all.

Brooks went to the doctor the following Monday and was told she had a torn ACL or Meniscus, either way the starting point guard would have to have surgery. The team experienced their first heartbreak together upon hearing this news, but they are using Brooks’ absence as motivation for each game and practice.

Although disappointed in the fact that she could be out for the season, Brooks is remaining optimistic. She will be cheering on her teammates at each game and practice with good advice and constructive criticism.

The coach is looking for girls to move around to new positions, knowing that his players will work hard wherever he chooses to put them. Coach Sims told the girls they would have to face adversity sooner or later in the season. This year’s first bump in the road has been met and will be overcome.
