Thanks to their kicker, Hunter Lawrence, the Horns will be going to the national championship after defeating Nebraska 13-12. The win would also crown them the champions of the Big XII conference with a final season record of 13-0. Winning the championship is the only thing that Texas’s senior quarterback, Colt McCoy needs to top off a great career at the University of Texas. Despite the great season that he had, this game proved to be a tough one for McCoy. He was sacked a total of nine times, 4 ½ credited to Heisman candidate Ndumakong Suh. McCoy had never been sacked more than four times, and this caused him to make some poor decisions that almost cost them the game. McCoy was 20 of 36 for 184 yards and a surprising six interceptions.

The Horns’ offense started off bad in the first quarter when McCoy threw interceptions on the first two series. Nebraska would only get two field goals out of this though, bringing the score 6-0 in the first. Nebraska would have another great opportunity after they blocked a Texas punt and took over on the 37-yard line. Unfortunately for them, Nebraska’s Zac Lee threw an interception on the next play. Despite this, the Horns could not get anything going.

Later in the Second, the Horns got the ball on Nebraska’s 42-yard line. McCoy then drove the ball down the field and scored the touchdown himself with a 2-yard run. This was actually the only touchdown of the game. This possession was also the Horns’ first to get past midfield. After this, both the Horns and Huskers struggled to get anything going in the rest of the half and most of the third.

With the third quarter almost over, the Horns were going back and forth, but finally capped the drive off settling for only a field goal. At the end of the third quarter, the score was 10-6 in favor of the Horns.

Starting off the fourth quarter, it seemed that the Horns would increase their lead when McCoy lobbed a pass to a wide open James Kirkendoll, but he dropped the ball. This was a great missed opportunity for the Horns because this pass would have more than likely gone for a 75-yard touchdown. Nebraska would then get the ball back with great field possession, following a punt return by Nile Paul. Nebraska would only get a field goal out of this drive though, bringing the score to 10-9. On the Horns’ next possession, McCoy threw an interception, and Nebraska got another field goal out of it. This put them up 12-10 with 1:44 left on the clock. The Horns would have to pull something out of a hat to get this win, and that is exactly what they did. With 1 second left on the clock, Texas’s Hunter Lawrence kicked a 46-yard field goal that would give them the win and send them to the national championship game.
