Universal Interscholastic League
One goal exists for Universal Interscholastic League of Teague High School this year; this goal is to “win district championship in Academics,” as stated by Mrs. Pate. Last year the UIL team was second place behind Rosebud-Lott when they won district Runner-up. Mr. Keith Guthrie from Mexia is the new debate coach this year so more students will be able to participate in Cross- Exam debate and Lincoln- Douglas Debate. With changes such as these, the UIL team has more than enough ability to win district and send students to the Regional and State meets. According to Mrs. Pate, in order to be a participant in UIL, students must have excellent study habits, have a keen interest in the contest topic, and be committed to learn more than typical classroom content. Students and teachers alike must work hard in order to be successful in UIL. But this hard work paid off for many students last year, especially the students who qualified for state. These students included Neel Patel, Matt Flori, Ryan Lawrence, and Taylor Hamilton. While students are extremely important, UIL coaches make every success possible. The UIL coaches for this year are as follows:
Number Sense- Mrs. Sherrina Garner
Mathematics- Mrs. Destiny Black
Calculator Applications- Mrs. Carrie Cromeens
Science- Mrs. Connie Sheffeild
Spelling and Vocabulary- Mrs. Barbara Blake
Current Events- Ms. Caroline Conley
Social Studies- Mr. Kyle Kilman
Literary Criticism- Mrs. Lynne Kilman
Ready Writing- Ms. Lola Myers
Journalism- Ms. Lola Myers
Poetry and Prose Interpretation- Mrs. Mary Sue Smith
Persuasive and Informative Speaking- Mrs. Mary Sue Smith
One Act Play- Mrs. Mary Sue Smith
Cross Exam and LD Debate- Keith Guthrie
Accounting- Mrs. Mary Margaret Pate
Computer Applications- Mrs. Mary Margaret Pate
These coaches and all UIL participants are already meeting and preparing for their events in order to ensure success this year. At this time they are preparing for the district meet, which is held at Franklin High School on April 2nd and March 30th. The Regional meet is April 24th at Tyler Junior College in Tyler and the State meet is May 7th and 8th in Austin at the UT campus. Expectations for UIL are high this year and with the terrific students and teacher participating, these expectations will be fulfilled.
