At last week’s faculty meeting, two outstanding members of the senior class were honored with CV’s student of the month award. This month’s winners, Imran Abedin and Lorna Roy both exhibit the qualities of leadership, citizenship and strength in academics.

The recipients of the Student of the Month Award are nominated by teachers and then selected by the school’s administration based on their virtues as members of the CV community.

Roy takes part in CV’s Work Ability program. Work Ability is a government-sponsored program that provides job training to special eduction students. The program also pays students for the work that they do at local stores.

“It [Work Ability] is during second period in Room 2210. We help them [the program’s participants] go out to the stores, show them how to work, and stuff like looking when you cross the street,” said Roy.

Roy has proven not only to be a leader in Work Ability, but also a helpful and talented person in everything that she does.

“She is very compassionate and kind, and is very good at encouraging her friends to do their best,” said Special Education teacher Lucy Witkop. “She helps everyone in every class, is smart and very developed.”

Roy plans to attend Glendale Community College and return to CV as a teacher’s assistant in the Work Ability program.

Meanwhile, Abedin is the current ASB President and active in both the school and the community. Abedin is a member of the School Site Council, the CVTV Advisory Board, California Scholarship Federation, Youth and Government, the Dreaming of Roses Committee and the Rose Float Association. He plans to attend the University of Southern California and go into business. However far his career may take him, though, he “will always come back to CV.”

Abedin also spoke about what makes a student worthy of the Student of the Month Award.

“They are someone who has leadership ability and are reliable, helpful and exemplify Falcon Spirit,” he said.

When considering that, it is easy to see why both Roy and Abedin were selected as Students of the Month.
