National Honor Society is comprised of select individuals from the student body. On Monday, April 4, 25 students were inducted into the McPherson chapter of the society.

Acceptance into National Honor Society (NHS) is an involved process.

“They have to rate highly in character, service and leadership; but even before that they have to have a 3.5 cumulative grade average through their high school years,” Marc Evans, NHS sponsor, said.

Students who meet the grade average requirement are listed on a ballot, where teachers nominate students who are eligible for the group on all accounts. To be accepted, a student must have a 3.75 average rating in character, leadership and service.

A faculty council comprised of five teachers decides the final results. This year’s council included: Carole Ferguson, Bette Grauer, Scott Schaefer, Kathy Heidebrecht and Fran Stucky.

This year marked Ferguson’s 16th year of participation in the faculty council. She finds NHS an important asset to the school.

“I think it recognizes our major purpose for being in school,” Ferguson said.

Individuals inducted into NHS are responsible for both a group and individual project throughout the school year. This school year, members hosted a community Thanksgiving dinner, as well as aided in the school supply train as group projects.

This year’s inductees are: Alexandra Archer, Katherine Burghart, Matthew Cotton, Britt Dahlstrom, Alysha Dockum, Chelsea Fibranz, Jordan Gibson, Madeline Grennan, Julia Groeblacher, Holli Heidebrecht, Sarah Holgerson, Anna Nealeigh, Torrance Parkins, Derek Payne, Callie Reber, Grace Rizza, Chelsea Ronsse, Lauren Russell, Kendra Schaefer, Mallorie Storm, Tucker Swanson, Ashley Sweat, Brette Ulsaker, Joel Wagoner and Amanda Wehrman.
