Doris Robertson (Kyla Pratt) has recently lost her grandfather and now finds herself in need of a friend. However, she no longer has an outgoing personality and she is constantly pushing people away.
After being harassed by some of her classmates, Doris runs home to be alone. She turns on the television to find an episode of Fat Albert. As tears slide down her cheeks and onto the remote in her hand, something odd is happening in the t.v. Fat Albert (Kenan Thompson) can hear Doris sobbing and knows he needs to help.
Doris watches, fear stricken, as the entire Fat Albert gang exits the television screen. At first, she can’t believe what’s happening, but after conversing with them, she realizes that the characters are actually there. The gang explains that they have come to help Doris but she denies having a problem.
After much debate, the exotic characters agree to return but unfortunately, the show is over until the following day. They have been trapped in the real world.
Doris attempts to leave the characters behind but they follow her to school, their quest: to find Doris friends. She refuses most of their offers, but a bribe by Fat Albert himself leaves her helpless.
Doris agrees to attend a party, and after a brief trip to the mall, she comes out looking stunning. The boys can’t help but drool a little.
She goes to the party and finds herself scared for the gang. But, when Fat Albert is called to the stage to be embarrassed, he ends up proving himself to be quite the hip-hop artist. Rather than singing the Fat Albert theme song in it’s usual classy tune, Fat Albert brakes it down in a full fledged rap.
As the day slowly draws on however, the Fat Albert crew finds itself in trouble. The longer they remain in the real world, the more washed out they become. Will Fat Albert and his friends make it back into the television world before evaporating?
While Fat Albert is away, problems are not only occurring in the real world but in the television world as well.
Complete with all of the classic characters, Fat Albert proves to have respect for its animated counterpart. The characters maintain all their odd traits and tendencies, making childhood memories return to adults. In the process of trying to bring a smile to the face of the audience, the movie provides a valuable lesson to young and old alike.
