Some
students make minor modifications to their appearance, while others
make changes that makes natural beauty seem distant. Although execution
to obtain the “desired look” may differ among students, those
interviewed said that they make changes to feel better about themselves.
Students
said that they alter their appearances to obtain natural beauty.
However, some female students said that getting their hair, nails and
eyebrows done is just enhancing their beauty, not changing it.
“I
get my hair, nails and eyebrows done, but I get my own hair done and I
don’t wear tips because that’s fake,” sophomore Tanasia Garland said.
“It’s not natural if it’s not natural.”
Garland also said dying your hair and wearing make-up is not natural beauty, but sophomore Markee Nesmith slightly disagreed.
“Natural
color foundation is okay, but pink eyeshadow and stuff is not natural,”
Nesmith said. “It is only natural beauty up to a certain extent, not
when you fully change your appearance.”
Senior Desmond Herrera gave his opinion about females wearing make-up.
“You don’t have to put make-up on to look beautiful; you still are,” Herrera said.
Although
making slight modifications to enhance one’s beauty is permitted in
attempts to maintain natural beauty, four female students interviewed
agreed that wearing weave extensions and “fake nails” do not accentuate
natural beauty.
Garland considers making artificial adjustments to her appearance like getting tattoos to be “covering up what God made.”
On
the contrary, senior Bevon Spencer said that [getting a tattoo] isn’t
covering up what God made if he only has one tattoo. He said that since
he has only one tattoo then it is okay; however, he also said that if he
had a gang tattoo on his arm, then it would be stupid.
Some students said that they don’t primp to appeal to other people, but to boost their self-confidence.
Herrera said that if he does not get a haircut and use cleansing products to fix his face, he’ll turn out unattractive.
“I do it so that one day I won’t have to wake up one morning looking like a beast,” Herrera said.
Sophomore Sabrina Torrez said that she is not insecure, but she thinks that she will be judged if she does not look her best.
“[People
will judge you] because if you look bummy, people are going to say you
look dirty,” Torrez said. “And if you’re dressed nice and your hair is
done, then they say that you have money and they want to show you off to
somebody.”
