Since September, freshman Lara Kong has raised over $26,000 to send disadvantaged students to see musicals put on by the California Musical Theater.

Kong, who plays the flute in the high school concert band, wanted to share her love of music and the arts with other students.

Kong began her fundraising by sending out a mission statement letter to friends, family, and businesses, outlining her initiative which she calls “On Broadway.”

When Kong began to get letters back, she was surprised by the fundraiser’s success.

A total of 46 people donated, with donations ranging from $50 to $5000.

Several notable contributors were State Assemblyman Roger Dickinson and County Supervisor Jimmie Yee, both friends of the Kong family.

National and local businesses, including Julius Clothing in Pavillions Plaza and Southern Wine and Spirits of America, Inc., were two of the top donors.

According to Breakthrough director Adolpho Mercado, Kong’s efforts have provided 224 tickets for Breakthrough classes to attend upcoming musicals such as “Wicked,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Grease.”

“Musicals are not everybody’s ‘cup of tea,’ but it is great to make this available and expose students to this art form,” Mercado said.

Kong hopes to continue and extend her project by raising more money and including students from the San Juan Unified School District in her efforts.
