On Feb. 9 against Sacramento Adventist the Cavs dominated the first half. They led by as much as 15 in the second quarter but only by two at halftime.

The Capitals sparked a comeback in the third and fourth quarters, outscoring the Cavs 42-28 in the second half to beat the Cavs, 73-59.

Feb. 5 saw the Cavs clinch a playoff spot by edging Global Youth, 58-50.

This win came as a surprise to some, as the Cavs lost their starting big men —senior Austin Karp and junior Richard Walter. Walter is out for the season while Karp returned Feb. 12 after missing two games.

“The guys put in 200 percent without two starters,” coach David Ancrum said.

Karp injured his ankle during a rebounding drill in practice and Walter hurt his knee in a game. Walter will have arthroscopic surgery on Feb. 19 to repair his dislocated patella.

Although injuries have plagued the Cavs, junior Angel Anguiano rejoined the team midway through the season, giving the Cavs another electrifying guard.

Anguiano played last year but initially chose not to join the team this year.

“[I came back because] I missed the thrill of playing basketball,” said Anguiano.

“I also wanted to play because my hamstring had finally healed from my soccer injury.”

With the help of Karp, the Cavs dismantled Lutheran for the second time this season on Feb. 2, 69-37. Karp scored 19 points and snatched 17 rebounds.

At Faith Christian’s homecoming game, the Cavs prevailed, beating the Lions, 87-58.

In the first quarter, senior Robbie Lemons stepped to the free-throw line where he was met with a chorus of “over-rated!” from the crowd. The Lions’ fans obviously felt that Lemons’ scoring abilities were overhyped. Lemons proceeded to increase his season average to 37.1 points per game by scoring 46 against the Lions.

Before their four-game win streak Jan. 26-Feb. 5, the Cavs lost back-to-back games against Valley Christian, 51-87, and Bradshaw Christian, 63-81.

Although senior Zach Eltorai distributed nine assists, the Cavs also fell short against Global Youth Charter Jan. 12, 73-61.

On Jan. 14, the Cavs traveled to Sacramento Adventist to face the Capitals. The team sank six of nine shots from behind the three-point arc, leading them to a 60-47 victory.

In their first match-up against Lutheran, Walter had 15 rebounds and Lemons had 35 points and 11 rebounds as the Cavs decimated the Panthers, 79-42, Jan. 8.

Girls

On Feb. 9, the girls were shut out in the first quarter and lost to Sacramento Adventist, 27-39.

“We were out rebounded and had 30 turnovers,” said coach Alisha Harris. “We won last week because of how well we took care of the ball.”

The girls beat Global Youth by their biggest margin of victory this season, 46-15, on Feb. 5.

After losing their previous six games, junior Francesca Bell was very pleased with this change of pace.

“Throughout the season, we’ve struggled a lot with turnovers—they’ve really hurt us,” Bell said.
“Against Global Youth, we had much better ball movement. Also, we achieved our goal of having more rebounds than turnovers.”

Leading scorer freshman Mary-Clare Bosco had 20 points and five rebounds, while senior Molly Tash had 11 points and five rebounds.

The girls have had an anti-climactic season, to say the least.

The Cavs have held leads throughout many of their recent games only to stumble in the final minutes and lose by small margins, dropping their overall record to 7-12.

Aside from a 24-64 loss to Bradshaw Christian, the strongest team in the league, the Cavs lost by fewer than five points in each of their last four losses.

On Feb. 2, the Cavs lost to Lutheran by only two points.

On Jan. 29 in Yuba City, the Cavs traded baskets with the Faith Christian Lions throughout the fourth quarter, only to fall short 22-26.

The girls also lost to Buckingham Charter on Jan. 26, 28-13.
