The smells of either marijuana and cigarettes, Caribbean cuisine, or breakfast food swirl around Delta of Venus (122 B St. in Davis) depending on the time of day.

Delta of Venus is a venue that opens itself to a variety of acts and crowds.

Recent performers included DJ Chillis (Jan. 3), rap duo The Other Poets (Jan. 9), and Kouta & the Red Barn Roots Band (Jan. 17).

During the small concerts 30 people cram into what seems like the converted living room and bedroom of the small house. The walls are covered in posters for past Whole Earth Festivals and the most current art exhibits.

At The Other Poets show, the outside’s smoky aroma wafted inside, where it mixed with the smell of the people and their drinks, mainly tea and organic beer.

The audience clustered in a tight semicircle around the performers, chanting obscenities when asked to by the group.

Delta of Venus customers range from anti-establishment high-school and college students to old hippies—and everything in between.

During DJ Chillis’s performance, almost every attendee had dreadlocks. High-school kids packed into the back room, dancing to the various electronic mixes coming from the four large speakers.

“It’s nice to have a regular live music venue that I can go to every weekend. The food is good in the day, and the dancing is good at night,” said Lana Dayne, a regular customer.

The customers enjoy not only the laid-back ambiance of the café, but also the unique food.

A wide range of choices, including vegetarian, vegan, and Caribbean (all cooked by chef Iwaca) are available weeknights for dinner, while brunch is served from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. They are especially famous for their Jamaican Jerk chicken with sweet potato, greens, and fried plantain.

And their breakfast menu isn’t just eggs and toast. They offer unusual meals, like Greek omelets, Mexican scrambles, and organic tofu scrambles.

Delta of Venus also offers 15 different kinds of teas, including Tibetan raspberry, yerba maté, genmaicha, and red rooibos.

A mixture of hip food, ambiance, unusual people, and music, Delta of Venus is a good day (or night) out.
