Gaudy and expensive? Then Gotham’s got it!

Coco Chanel may have said “Look in the mirror before you leave the house and take off one accessory,” but judging by its gaudy inventory, Beyond Gotham took these famous words and threw them out the window.

When walking into the store, located at 1215 18th St., you are immediately accosted by row upon row of glittering Swarovski crystal bracelets, earrings, necklaces and rings.

The store, which looks something like a larger, ritzier Claire’s, is mainly an accessories store but features clothing such as jeans, tees and jackets, as well as knick-knacks for the house.

According to the store employees, Beyond Gotham sells most of its jewelry to prom-goers and wedding parties, which is fitting as most of the jewelry is red-carpet glamorous–sans the real diamonds, of course.

Instead, the majority of the jewelry is made from Swarovski crystals or rhinestones, and comes in a variety of colors from clear to blood red.

The Website proclaims that “Beyond Gotham accessories include the trendiest of handbags, stunningly elegant necklace sets, and a large assortment of attention demanding jewelry, all of which are a key element of the A-lister lifestyle.” The jewelry is most certainly attention-getting, as are the prices, which range from $12.99-99.99 for costume jewelry.

Most of the jewelry should not be worn outside of prom, but if flashy is the objective, then it’s the perfect store.

In the midst of all the day-glo jewelry, however, is a large selection of designer jeans, the most expensive of which are handcuffed to the racks.

When asked whether the unusual hanging method was for looks or safety, the store clerk said it was for safety because lately a group of gay men had been coming into the store, grabbing things, and running away with them.

Despite the apparent comedy of this, it’s understandable, seeing as how a decent pair of True Religion Jeans (one of the staple brands of the store) can cost $170-255. However, I would hope that they would have more taste since some of the Ed Hardy merchandise—which includes hats, shoes, t-shirts, and other accessories, (another of the store’s staple brands)—looks like it belongs on Kevin Federline, as opposed to “an A-list star.”

The jeans selection is not as extensive as the accessories, but Beyond Gotham carries a relatively large selection of designer jeans. From the most expensive True Religion Jeans to the Seven Jeans look-alikes, they have a wide variety. For those who care about labels, look no farther than the True Religions and Paige Denim. For others there are designer labels such Allen B., Earnest Sewn, and Frankie B.

As an accessories store, Beyond Gotham dangerously walks the line between “tacky” and “quirky.” My advice is to stick with the gay men and go straight for the jeans.
