There are fair odds that somewhere in the world, you have a double.
But what are the odds that so many faculty and students have found pairs in the same area?
“When I first saw [physics teacher Glenn] Mangold, I wasn’t sure who he was. I saw him from the back and I thought [history teacher Bruce] Baird grew a little. When I got a chance to look at him straight on, I realized that this must be the new physics teacher,” junior Seth Katz said.
Many faculty and students, including Mangold himself, feel that the two teachers share a strong resemblance.
“I definitely see the connection; I think it’s funny. Dr. Baird looks like he could be my cousin,” Mangold said.
“Our hair is very similar, and we both wear glasses. We also have a darkish appearance.”
However, Mangold said that students most often bring up his physical similarity to chemistry teacher Matthew Peck. “He and I are kind of tall, and have a similar body shape. We also both teach science, which I found to be a funny coincidence. [The connection is made most often] because we are often standing next to each other in the same room,” Mangold said.
But Baird doesn’t see any similarity between him and Mangold.
He does, however, agree he looks like Aaron Harris, ‘04.
“There was a picture of Aaron Harris the year he graduated and it was shown right next to my picture. When I saw it, I thought, ‘Oh, wow, we do look alike!’” Baird said.
Others see a connection between faculty members and celebrities.
One look-alike couple is journalism adviser Patricia Fels and the cartoon character Edna Mode from the movie “The Incredibles.”
Meredith Bennett-Smith, ’06, was the first to notice that similarity.
“When [Bennett-Smith] mentioned it, everyone on the Octagon staff agreed,” said Fels.
“I thought it was funny,” Fels said, after hearing the comparison. “I cut out a picture [of Mode] and put it in my planner. [The picture] had been doctored so that the character was holding a pen in her hand [as I do],” Fels said.
This isn’t the first time that Fels has had a “look-alike.”
At the restaurant Hana Tsubaki on J Street, a waitress is known to many past students as “Japanese Fels.”
Junior Michael Lewis hears a lot about his similarity to Ryan Howard [BJ Novak] from the American TV show “The Office.”
Lewis acknowleges his similarity to the character and agrees with the other students.
“I do notice it, we look alike. I had not seen ‘The Office’ though, so I didn’t notice until [junior] Tyler Trussell pointed it out to me. After that, I watched an episode and agreed [with Trussell],” Lewis said.
“I was sitting in my family room watching the show with my mom, and the entire time I kept saying ‘Something is really familiar about that guy,’ Trussell said.
“Finally, when a commercial ended and it showed his face, I figured it out. I scared my mom by jumping up and yelling, ‘Oh, my god! It’s Michael Lewis!’
“He has a long face, and so do I. We both have big eyes. Our hair is different, but he has the same eyebrows as me,” Lewis said.
Math teacher Chris Millsback is possibly the most talked-about look-alike on campus. Many students say he looks like Buzz Lightyear from Pixar’s “Toy Story.”
Millsback hears about the resemblance frequently in class and, on occasion, outside of school hours.
“One of the parents even noticed the similarity at Back-to-School Night,” he said.
But Millsback said he can’t see the connection.
“I have no idea. I don’t really notice any similarities. I mean, I don’t have a hairy chin, I don’t wear a spacesuit, and I don’t wear a mask,” Millsback said about Buzz Lightyear.
In addition to Buzz Lightyear, Millsback has been told he looks like Mr. Incredible from “The Incredibles,” but Millsback thinks that’s crazy.
Teachers are often willing to keep the connection they share with characters “alive.”
Fels has a picture of her look-alike, and Millsback plans to strengthen the ties between him and Buzz Lightyear.
“Eventually, I do want to buy my own spacesuit,” he said.
