Since when did four letter words become a part of the curriculum?
The question has to be asked. Just how appropriate is it for teachers to be cussing in the classroom? Teachers are supposed to be role models that set forth a good example for their students. Regardless of what teenagers might think, we are at a very impressionable age. Look at how celebrities and personalities in society influence what we do. It’s like “monkey see, monkey do.” Are we teenagers playing the part of the monkey?
I know that when I hear a teacher cussing in class, it surprises me. Doesn’t it surprise you too? I mean; there are just some things you wouldn’t expect a teacher to be saying in class. In fact, I feel that the language a teacher uses makes it more comfortable for a student to do the same in the classroom. I would be more apt to refrain from cussing if my teachers set the example, regardless of how much I toss around the “f-bomb” on my own time.
To those of you teachers, who might take a more lax attitude towards your language in the classroom, remember that you do need to set an example. You need to watch yourselves because there are students here that will take your conduct seriously. There are students who do look up to you and the things you do. “Teaching needs to be at a higher standard,” says Dysart Physics teacher, Susan Poland, “Teachers who curse during class don’t promote positive role models.”
I guess cussing is a little thing to worry about, but hey, the little things count too. So teachers, please take that into consideration if you don’t do so already. The way you act around your students now will be remembered, possibly for the rest of their lives.
