Red Ribbons are everywhere!
As most know, Red Ribbon Week was the week of October 27th. Red Ribbon Week is “a week to promote a drug- and alcohol-free lifestyle to our students at Dysart High School,” says Ms. Amy Streem, sponsor of Students Against Destructive Decisions.
SADD hosts this week of activities and fun. They gave out drug-free items the week of October 27th, including candy, bookmarks, and of course, the prominent red ribbons at all lunches. This isn’t just exclusive to Dysart, however. All schools in the district observed Red Ribbon Week. “We want all our students to be drug free,” says Streem.
Red Ribbon Week is made possible by the Arizonans for Drug Free Youth and Communities, Inc. They (the AFDFY&C) state that, “The Red Ribbon is more than just a ribbon. It is a symbol of awareness. It is a sign that we will continue to strive for a drug-free state and nation.” The red ribbons symbolize the continuing war waging against drugs, allowing students and teachers to proudly display their drug-free lifestyle.
SADD students and Ms. Streem were happy to see students around campus getting involved in the Red Ribbon Week activities. “They really liked the drunk goggles,” said Streem. The goggles showed what it would be like to be drunk and disoriented by using refractive lenses and weird effects.
SADD students really enjoyed working on the event. “Organizing, planning and executing Red Ribbon Week was difficult, but rewarding,” said SADD President Erica Ortiz.
In the future, SADD plans on doing more events around campus, to keep students aware of the consequences of their choices. They’re bringing an educational rap group, called the “Funkamentals,” from Tucson. They rap about education and a healthy lifestyle, and are attempting to make a positive impact on students around the world. SADD also plans on setting up a mock car crash before prom, in order to educate students, as well as other special events. Look for more from SADD soon!
