Hop on board for a trip with the History Club.
Dysart High School’s History Club is a way of promoting people’s ideas in history. It works to make history interesting and creates a way for a student, if interested, to be encouraged into entering the field of history at the college level.
One way the History Club gives students a ‘hands-on” learning experience is to take trips. Just recently, the History Club went on a trip to Sedona and Jerome, Arizona. The club started off their trip in Sedona where they took one of the local Jeep tours and drove Shnebly Hill Road. “The road was blasted to make the trip from Sedona to Flagstaff faster. It is definitely a four wheel ride,” stated Dysart History teacher, Ms. Leonardi, who is in charge of the History Club.
While in Sedona, students learned about the history of Sedona’s incredible rock formations, geology of the area, and the mystic powers believed to be housed inside the land. Afterwards, the club went to lunch in Sedona and moved on to Jerome where they visited the historic Douglas Mansion. There, they learned about Jerome’s early silver mining history, how it become a ghost town, and how it transformed into the popular artist colony that it is today.
Currently, the History Club has around 26 members, and is continuing to grow. According to Ms. Leonardi, the club is always open to new membership because the more members the club has, the more trips they go on. The History Club just applied to go on a trip to Washington D.C. and New York and if approved, this will be their focus for May. The History Club is also hoping for a trip to France and Germany. The request for the trip was rejected last time around, due to it being requested before 9-11 and the war with Iraq. As things settle down, the overseas trips can become more probable, but for now, the History Club is finding plenty of things to do here in the U.S. and close to home.
