The Russians are taking over New York!
Well at least that’s the scenario in the new squadron based game Freedom Fighters. You play as Christopher Stone, your average everyday New Yorker, who is thrown into the role as the leader of an underground resistance after the Soviets drop a nuclear bomb on Washington D.C., then begin their invasion of the country from Canada and Mexico, trying to take over key cities.
From Electronic Arts, through its subsidiary company I/O Interactive, the creator of many gaming goliaths, such as Medal of Honor, and Lord of the Rings, this game really dropped the ball. The game play was boring to say the least, the story line predictable and not very well thought out, and the graphics were mediocre at best.
The only good part of the game would have to be the squadron play. Solicit as many NPCs as your charisma allows, and send them into battle, but be careful, the more battles you fight in, and the more people who die the lower your charisma. However reach a checkpoint, or complete an objective, watch your charisma rise and watch the NPCs roll in.
Also the arsenal in the game was awesome with everything from six shooter pistols to Molotov cocktails, to Grenade Launchers. The only bad thing was you are only allowed to carry one main weapon at a time. So you have to choose between either, the AK47 and the Rocket Launcher.
The multiplayer option was also available, with up to four people going head to head. Choose either American Freedom Fighter, or Soviet Trooper, and try to take over enemy bunkers, or play Capture the Flag. Either way I’m sure you’ll have fun (not). Overall I was very disappointed.
My Rating: ** Horrible
