Students turned pain into profit as they raised money for a family in need recently. Dakota Valley students held two fundraisers last week to support the Yates and Scott families that were affected in the Jefferson house fire that occurred on Tuesday, August 12th.

Jeff Hamm, junior high math teacher and zone instructor, supported his zone’s decision to raise money for the cause. “I was very pleased that they think of other people. It was one hundred percent their idea,” said Hamm, referring to his students.

Members of Hamm’s zone held a bake sale during two study hall periods. They strolled through the halls, stopping in classrooms to sell the desserts provided. Students had the opportunity to purchase homemade baked goods and juice or milk for fifty cents each. The $263.84 that was raised from their community service project was placed into an account at Security National Bank. This account has been distinctly set aside for the Yates and Scott families.

People that did not have the opportunity to participate in the middle school bake sale donated money during the home volleyball game on Thursday, September 4 against Elk Point Jefferson.

“It’s obviously not easy, but support for them has not only come financially, but morally and many have extended a hand to hold through this hard time,” said junior, Ashley Faldmo. Faldmo, along with other student council members teamed up with student council members from EPJ to coordinate their efforts in raising money. A total of $457.55 was donated at the volleyball game.

Over $700 dollars was raised by students in just two days with hard work and a goal to help out people in need. People still interested in donating money to the cause can stop by Security National Bank.
