FOX's Wednesday night sitcom I Hate My Teenage Daughter is slowly becoming one of the network's most popular shows. After its premiere, the show only aired three more episodes before going on a winter hiatus, slated to return soon in January. The show follows two single mothers and best friends Annie (Jaime Pressley) and Nikki (Katie Finneran). As the pair tries to navigate the world of teenage parenting, they realize that Annie's daughter Sophie, (Kristi Lauren) and Nikki's daughter Mackenzie (Aisha Dee), are becoming the kind of “mean girls” that tortured them when they were fourteen.
The last episode, "Teenage Dating" showed Sophie getting her first boyfriend. At first, Annie was apprehensive about allowing Sophie's boyfriend, Hunter, because he was two years older than her. However, she began to approve when she noticed what a good influence he was on Sophie. As the episode continued, Annie fully supported Sophie and Hunter's relationship-- until she found out that Hunter was a teenage father himself. Meanwhile, Nikki get's Annie's crush Jack (Kevin Rahm), who is a lawyer and Annie's ex-husband's brother, to help Mackenzie with her report on the court system. However, when Jack starts losing the attention of the jury during his case, he becomes the one in need of help. Nikki and Mackenzie take over the job by offering to give him an impressive new look.
While the sitcom shows a lot of promise and has the potential to become a hit series, it is not quite there yet. The episodes are entertaining and the dialogue and acting are both executed well but the show can have some boring, cliched plotlines. With time, the show could easily improve by incorporating more of a lasting storyline in its episodes. Overall, this show is recommended to a variety of audiences, since it shows perspectives from both parents and children.
