IRVINE- On Tuesday, January 10, the Beckman Patriots’ Varsity Basketball team defeated the University Trojans 70-43. Despite the big gap, the game was very intense and all players fought hard for the victory. The Trojans seemed to follow Beckman closely at first; however, the Patriots dominated the game with their offense.
When the first quarter began, Beckman scored a few more points than the Trojans 6-2, but the crowd stayed silent until the Patriots made ten points since it was the Silent Night. When Beckman failed to make a three-pointer, University was able to recover with lay-ups 6-7. Then, with free throws, the Patriots readied themselves for a round of applause 9-9. Senior Cameron Biedgoly shot the ball and at the moment of making the tenth point with a lay-up, the Beckman crowd screamed as loud as they could. Because the crowd encouraged the team, the Patriots ended the quarter with continuous attacks, 18-13.
In the beginning of the second quarter, the Trojans tightened up the defense, blocking the Patriots to get closer to the hoop. The game became even more tense, yet, the Patriots still managed to prevail over the opponents without too much difficulty, 22-18. Because the Trojans began to catch up, Coach Fischel brought the players in. After the time-out, Beckman moved faster and passed the ball around much quicker, also being much more focused, 31-21. Throughout the first and second quarter, senior Bracy Simmons led the Patriots with his energy. Simmons commented, “We were getting opened a lot better than we usually do, attacking the basket, playing defense and rebounding.” The second quarter was over when University succeeded in catching up a bit more, 31-25.
Beckman maintained a huge gap, not letting the Trojans to truly enjoy the game, 41-27. However, after time-out from University, the players seemed to become more assertive, gaining more opportunities to shoot. Nevertheless, this was not enough to recover the big loss from the first and second quarter, 45-34. Then, Beckman made consecutive goals from free throws and shots from all the players. In addition, Simmons stole the ball from the Trojans, making the ball into the hoop, 55-34.
In the last quarter, the Trojans attempted to put on a spurt by tightening the defense, but it simply slowed the game, making fewer goals 58-35. Then, the Patriots displayed some offensive plays and these were mainly led by junior Tracy Gibson, who never stopped running. With a minute left on the clock, Beckman scored again, finally making 70-43. Winning the first league game satisfied the coaching staff and the team. Coach Fischel acknowledged the team’s efforts: “We had very good energy on the floor and better execution and really good focus on what we were trying to accomplish.”
Because it was the first league game of the season, Beckman has high expectation of the season. Cameron Biedgoly remarked, “It was a great game to open our home stunt with a win. I guess beating the University team was a confidence builder going into next games.” With this huge gap, the Patriots will continue to enjoy the victories throughout the entire year.
