IRVINE- A new rule at Beckman makes it mandatory for Patriots to wear ID lanyards at all times while on campus to promote safety. This is Beckman’s first year enforcing the rule and it will continue to be a school policy in years to come.
Other schools in the Tustin Unified School District are committed to enforcing the lanyard policy as well.
Beckman believes that having all their students wear their ID lanyards is important for many reasons. Every student needs to have identification when they set foot on campus. It is for the students' safety to be identified immediately so that it is known they are a Beckman student and not a stranger walking around campus. Wearing ID lanyards also prepares students for the adult world, where professional buisinesses require employees to wear identification.
The proper way of wearing ID lanyards is around your neck. “Lanyards cannot be put in your pockets with the strap hanging out, it is to be put around your neck only”, said Assistant Principal Mr. Garcia. If any staff members catch a Beckman student not wearing their ID lanyard they will be asked to put it on. “Maybe we will start giving out detentions to students if they do not wear their ID lanyards, but we still do not know if we will or not," Garcia said.
Some Beckman students disagree with this new policy of wearing the lanyards at all times. Subsequently, these students may break school rules by choosing not to wear them.
Some students do not mind having to wear their ID lanyards on campus.
Although many students do wear lanyards, others choose not to follow the new policy. In the Tustin Unified School District, Beckman is the last school to adopt the procedure. While students may deem wearing lanyards as unnecessary, school administrators continue to enforce the policy in order to keep students safe and secure while on campus.
