IRVINE- On Monday, October 10, the Lady Patriots Varsity Volleyball team dominated the Irvine Vaqueros 3-0. Beckman played hard and were able to keep their losses at zero this season. The Vaqueros displayed a high level of technique but could not overcome the Lady Patriots' aggressive offense.
Both sides played evenly by exchanging skillful hits and attacks in the first match. In the beginning, the Irvine Vaqueros played actively in order to widen the score gap after taking a small lead. However, the Lady Patriots soon gained control of the game by winning the spike battle consistently. The Lady Patriots succeeded in catching up to Irvine because they were not hesitant to attack more aggressively. At last Beckman turned the tables and won the first match 25-21.
Once again, the Vaqueros scored consecutively with their blocks and serves when the second match started 0-3. Nevertheless, the Lady Patriots soon overcame their losses by leaning on junior and captain Ella Roberts. She commented, “I thought it was a fun game. In the beginning it was even, but we progressed throughout the game.” Roberts scored enough points to tie the game at 4-4 as she spiked the ball to the opponents’ court with assistance from her teammates. Even though the Lady Patriots played with energy and enthusiasm 9-4, Irvine effectively encouraged the Vaqueros to strike the ball over the net after the timeout 9-8. Beckman and Irvine had a close match when the game began; however, the Lady Patriots dominated the rest with their incessant spikes from junior Ella Roberts and Monica Rau 25-16.
Unlike the first and second matches, Beckman began the third with a lot of momentum behind them. Although the Lady Patriots made a few errors by touching the net and gave away some points, they were able to return with their ceaseless hits and dominated the scoreboard, which at one point read 15-4. Irvine looked for opportunities to take control back by using another timeout. Despite their efforts, the Vaqueros failed to recover the losses 25-14. After the win, junior Tess Arthur mentioned how the Lady Patriots felt about the game with the Vaqueros: “It was fun and exciting. We had a good rally. We played as a team as usual.”
Because this was their fourth victory in league, the Lady Patriots and the coaching staff displayed pride and joy about their progress. Head Coach McBain remarked, “[I am] Very excited about the way we played. We are 4-0 in league so far. We haven’t lost a game so far.” As Coach McBain revealed how proud he is, Beckman Lady Patriots Volleyball team will improve even more in future games.
