At first glance at Mr. Bryce Lu, teacher of Honors Biology and Forensics, an elective science, one is inundated with mixed feelings of confusion, intimidation, and possibly laughter. For the past three years, Mr. Lu’s love for teaching and Beckman High School students has displayed through his enjoyment of developing rewarding relationships with his students, and being able to see them mature and grow up into young adults who are ready to make an impact on the world.
Most commonly described as tall, dark, and handsome, Mr. Lu epitomizes the fabulosity that many teachers aspire to. Sophomore Judy Hyeon stated, “He’s the best teacher ever! He makes learning fun by teaching us with jokes. It helps me remember what we learned.” Mr. Lu defines his ideal student as, “Someone who is willing to try, and not being afraid to fail at it, willing to work hard, but I like the fact that certain kids have a sense of humor and that allows me to develop that relationship with them.” Like most teachers, Mr. Lu cares for his previous students and welcomes them into his room whenever they are under lots of stress.
When it comes to Beckman as an overall community of students and faculty, Mr. Lu expressed, “I think it has a unique culture, because I feel like the students are nice to each other, and that’s not always something I see in other schools. I feel like students are all accepted for their individuality. It’s culturally diverse, yet everyone is very accepting and tolerant of each other.” His passion for teaching and interaction with his students is further displayed; he revealed, “If [I was] not [teaching] science, I would still teach in the education field and be involved with kids.”
Some of his favorite things consist of the color blue and Chinese food. He enjoys listening to 60’s music, Motown, but especially enjoys So So Sorry by So So Sujeong, which he claims as the best album of all time. Mr. Lu is dedicated to the GATTACA series, but he is particularly fond of GATTACA 3, Return of Gerome. In his free time, he occupies himself with hobbies such as surfing and Brazilian jujitsu.
For his current and future students, he optimistically aspires to inspire. Mr. Lu declared, “I hope that I give my students some sort of insight into what they can do in the future; I hope I open the doors so they see the opportunities that are being made for them.”
