This Beckman Patriot exemplifies the 13 Trū Blū traits. He is what makes a Beckman Patriot. A diligent and distinguished individual in and out of the classroom, he is not just a teen prodigy, but an extroverted person involved in numerous activities, rubbing his talents and personality off onto his peers. His name is Chyi-Dean Shu.

Something that he is very well known for among his peers is his talent in photography and graphic design. “I do freelance graphic design for small dotcoms,” he explained. Dean started doing graphic design during his freshman year, and then took an interest in photography mid-sophomore year. He has won contests like the Olympus Student Photo Contest and Adobe Youth Voices. “From the Olympus Contest, I won an Olympus SLR kit and $200 in software,” he stated proudly, “As for the Adobe, I didn’t win anything tangible, but the contest asked contestants to submit images to tell a story of crisis and hope.” He continued, “The images I used were the ones I took from
Taiwan while volunteering under Red Cross, so I thought it was meaningful and for a good cause.”
The sixteen year old immigrated to the United States from Taiwan at the age of two. Shu has also been requested to take pictures for bands during concerts, and all of his work is posted on his website DeanShu.com, and on his Facebook page with comments flooding his albums.

His passion is not limited to the camera; thanks to his intellect, he is one year ahead in mathematics and science. Dean enjoys his English and history classes the most. “A large part of my schedule is up in the air,” he said, “I don’t know what science and math I’ll take next year.” Dean is already planning for college and has Harvard in mind because his sister, whom he looks up to, is currently studying there. This path is not set in stone, however. He still desires to apply to different colleges and go on from there.

Dean also manages to fit extracurricular activities into his busy schedule. He has been technician for his sophomore year in Key Club and is now a Junior Representative. He is also part of the planning committee for Link Cru.

Whether he is in school or hanging out with friends, Dean brings laughter with his exotic humor. Keep a look out for Dean Shu’s name in any well known magazine or website in the near future!
