Thursday, May 07, 2009 By Leslie Parra The Beckman Patriots defeated Laguna Hills in a highly-anticipated volleyball game. - Photograph Leslie Parra Advertising Laguna Goes Downhill IRVINE- On Tuesday, May 5, the Beckman Boys' Varsity Volleyball Team (12-8) competed against Laguna Hills High School at the Beckman High Olympic Gym in a league game, defeating them in three matches and taking home a win. This was the last home game of the season and also Senior Night, a recognition for seniors involved in the Beckman Volleyball Team. These included Paul Goodman, #12, outside hitter, who was out during this game due to an injury, Jordan Cheng, #3, setter, Grant Itow, #7, outside hitter, and Ronald Han, #6, middle back.   During the first match, Beckman easily grabbed the lead and defeated Laguna Hills. Beckman was led by Han, and sophomore Jeff Austin, #43, middle back. The game concluded with Beckman on top with 25 points. Senior Mila Merchan, a Patriot in the audience commented, "The Boys started of strong and showed Laguna Hills they were going to win again."   Throughout the second match, the Beckman Patriots once again took the lead, carrying the win in their pocket. Laguna Hills tried to step it up, though it wasn't enough to catch up and defeat the Patriots.    The third match was decisive for the Patriots. Laguna Hills stepped it up a notch and was able mantain the score throughout the duration of the final match. A couple mistakes by Beckman caused Laguna Hills to take the lead, yet Beckman kept their guard up and did not back down. Both teams got up to 20 points, making it too close for comfort. The score reached 24-23 and any mistake from the Patriots would cause the win, yet with a spike from Beckman, the score ended at 25-23. Han stated, "We beat Laguna Hills a week ago, so we were expecting the same."   On May 7, at 5:15 pm, Beckman will be competing against University High School at University in a league game.
