FOOTHILL - On Tuesday, May 5, Beckman Boys' Lacrosse lost to the Foothill Knights, 3-18. It might have not been the prettiest game of their careers, but Beckman Boys' Varsity Lacrosse didn’t waiver, no matter how much Foothill ran the score up.

The beginning of the game started with Foothill running the score to 0-5 at the end of the first quarter of play. Some of the fans on Beckman’s side were getting angry and losing hope that the team could ever come back against such a highly touted team. However, with 58 seconds left in the second quarter, junior Robert Williams scored a goal against the Knights. What was a very quiet crowd at the beginning now roared with appreciation for what had occurred. Beckman had new life.

The end of the second quarter was no new news with Foothill up, 1-8. Beckman Lacrosse players were getting thrown to the ground by some very physical Knights players. In the beginning of the third quarter, sophomore Brandon Propp brought his grade-A goalie game. Shots from Foothill players were coming in every which way. However, Propp blocked nearly everything with his steady lacrosse stick. “I believed I played my best during the third quarter. Even though I let up a few goals, I was giving them easy shots,” commented Propp.

Another thrill for the Beckman crowd came with 4:22 left on the clock during the third quarter when Williams scored his second goal of the game, followed by a rapid goal by junior John Liekhus with only 1:15 left on the clock. However, the score was still well in the Knight’s favor as they were ahead, 3-12.

Unfortunately, no goals were scored by the Patriots as the game ended with Foothill scoring five more goals and one buzzer-beater at the end of the fourth quarter. Beckman was beat, mentally and physically. They came in with such high hopes, and now no one wanted to talk about the game. However, a substitute player who was used sparingly throughout the game, Everett Anderson had an uplifting attitude. He explained, “I thought we did really well under the circumstances. We all knew how good Foothill was and we were excited to play them. They’re currently ranked number two in the county, so I guess this can be used as a moral victory.”

Mr. Bowman, an AP Government and US History Honors teacher at Beckman, who serves as an assistant Varsity Lacrosse coach, also commented on the game. “First of all, Foothill is very aggressive to the ball, they’re big, and they play a very physical lacrosse game. I think we can learn from that and put into use next year,” he explained.

Beckman Boys' Lacrosse will have a chance to avenge their loss at Foothill when they face Dana Hills on Thursday, May 8, in a Division II CIF playoff game.
