IRVINE- On December 31, 2008, MTV presented Beckman High School with “A Miley-Sized Surprise.” Beckman senior, Alison Kaprielian, won a day and a surprise concert in her honor with the pop star Miley Cyrus.  As part of an MTV contest, Alison was chosen out of many contestants as the star guest for the New Year’s Eve surprise. Red carpet, neon lights, and excited Beckman Patriots made the event even more exhilarating as celebrities entered the school campus. Kevin Rudolf, Miley Cyrus, The Academy, All Time Low, and The Veronicas all showed up at the event and provided all sorts of entertainment.

Students with different taste in music went to the event and ended up cheering for all the artists as they rocked the Beckman campus with music and energy. Christina Phan, a sophomore at Beckman, commented, “I never thought that I would be able to see some of my favorite singers up so close! I went with my friends and we had a great time. I cheered and danced; it was a day to remember. I thought it was cool how Miley Cyrus brought a pink Cadillac car to the campus. It was so cute!” Phan and her friends were able to see the live performances up close during the Miley-Sized Surprise event.
Not only girls, but guys even showed up to celebrate the event. Eric Nguyen, a junior at Beckman, explained, “This is an opportunity to meet some of my favorite artists live. I went with my friends, and we all hung out together while checking out the cool concert settings Beckman set up. Nguyen continued, “I thought that this was pretty much a once in a lifetime experience. It was kind of like winning a lottery. I enjoyed the show, and I brag to the guys that didn’t go even to this day.” Nguyen later got to see the artists sing live while the Beckman Patriot Marching Band members performed a spectacular show for the MTV event.

Miguel Navaro, a sophomore at Beckman High School, considered the night to be a major event in his life. He explained, “I thought that the event was awesome, especially because I was actually part of it. I played in the marching band as a drummer, and was able to see the live performances made by Miley Cyrus up close. It was truly a day to remember.” Navaro was one of many band performers that were able to experience the event up close.

With the appearance of Alison during the surprise, many Beckman students cheered as she stood in shock. The event was a true success and Alison was awarded with $15,000 to help with the Pink Ribbon Club fundraiser. Overall, the Miley-Sized Surprise was a successful and truly influential event that has left a memorable mark on Beckman High School’s history.
