IRVINE-The Varsity Girls' Tennis Team walked away victorious after a match against Aliso Niguel High School on Thursday, September 25. This boosted their record to 7 wins, with only 1 loss. “The girls are putting forth a lot of energy and focus into all their games. They all have a strong connection, so the combination translates into wins,” said Coach Hollie.

The top two singles players, juniors Megan Henaghan and Irene Cruz started the Lady Patriots off with a heavy advantage over the Wolverines, winning all three of their sets 6-0. This inspired the rest of the players to dominate. “I am so proud of our tennis team. Last year we didn’t beat them, but look at us now,” said senior Alison Bunce, who played singles that day.

Towards the middle of the game, Beckmangirls found themselves tied to Aliso Niguel, which caused some distress. However, doubles partners senior Morgan Helmsetter and junior Leslie Orpiano, who were playing against the number one team, brought Beckman to a victory, with a score of 6-4, after a series of intense rallying. “Morgan and I as doubles partners came out in our first two sets a little slow and rocky, but we pulled through and finished the match,” Orpiano stated.

Frequent enthusiasts of the tennis team say that, when observing the girls support each other and interact with one another, it is easy to see what Coach Hollie meant about their strong bond. Captain Kelsey Dougherty put this feeling into perspective, commenting,“We are family…I got all my sisters and me!” With this close-knit relationship, many believe the Lady Patriots' winning streak will continue.
