At-a-glance

Relationships have many definitions, and as we grow, these definitions change dramatically. Back in grade school we considered a boyfriend or girlfriend to be someone we played with on the playground and occasionally shared our lunch with. Then came middle school, where we had a partner because everyone thought it would be fun. Yet nothing seemed to last. Just when we thought the changes would come to an end high school rolled around, and gave relationships a whole new meaning. Once again our definition of a boyfriend or girlfriend has changed.

At a point in our lives, we as high school students feel the need to grow and mature, one of the most popular ways to do so is to engage in a serious relationship. We begin to feel like adults because of the role we are playing; therefore we begin to act like them.

More than often high school couples become obsessed with each other. This is when jealousy steps in and the drama begins. What would high school relationships be with out the countless teenage girls in the restrooms crying just because their boyfriend was talking to another girl? Or guys causing fights because another guy was "looking" at their girlfriend. Of course, every teenager at some point wants a partner, its part of growing up; which plays a major role in feeling mature. Nonetheless should high school relationships go to the level they do?

As teenagers we forget that this is the time in our lives when we need to grow and become our own person. But how can we when our focus is not in the correct place? We spend every moment of what used to be our free time with our partners. In time we begin to neglect our friends and even more importantly our school work.

I cannot tell everyone that they shouldn’t engage in a serious relationship while in high school, because I myself was in one. Yes, it was enjoyable, and a fine experience. But while in this relationship I drifted away from what was truly important to me. I am now able to spend time with my friends and my schoolwork is no longer suffering. I am happier now more then ever. There is a happy medium and in order to find it we must experience what life has to offer, but in the meantime why should we struggle to act like adults, we have the rest of our lives to do just that!
