IRVINE: History has been made in the humble halls of Arnold O. Beckman High School. In the midst of the humdrum of a Distinguished School visitation and a school dance, a true hero has emerged. Beckman Junior Ben Sill has made history as being the first Beckman student to qualify for the National Pencil Twirling Competition for Pencil Twirlers (NPTCPT).

Ben Sill was a simple boy, moving to Beckman in the summer of sophomore year with plans of being a normal high school student. However he could not escape greatness. One day while taking a Spanish test, his pencil moved across his pointer finger, he then caught it with his middle finger and repeated the process. History was made.

Ben devoted the majority of his school year to studying and practicing the ancient art of pencil twirling. “He practices a lot” said Math Teacher, Mrs. Leland. “He always practices during class, his focus is impressive, even my lesson can’t distract him from his pencil” she said while holding Ben’s most recent failed test. Indeed Ben has been in a state of pin-point preparation, so focused that even the constant threat of retention has not fazed him. When asked about this, Ben replied, “It’s all for the love of the game.”

Ben’s practice regimen is intense. “I first do 500 finger push-ups, followed by 1000 finger pull ups, all before I go to school.” He continued, “When I go to school, I begin practicing technical stuff” According to Ben, “Spanish is for twirling, Math is when I practice finger spins and 360’s, English is when I work on speed and control, Biology is when I work on my tricks, like kick flips, eraser grinds, and Ollies.”

Ben’s talents have not gone unnoticed, “After I qualified, I saw more people practicing pencil twirling”, Ben said. Teachers have also noticed, “I received a lot of complaints about pencil twirling” commented Principal Hoover, “It’s kind of unsettling.” It seems as if Ben’s efforts have broken the barrier between pencils and sports.

When asked about the chances of losing to a new Beckman pencil twirler Ben replied, “I welcome all competitors, but I am the king. I am the Tupac of pencils.”

Ben will travel to Okeechobee, Florida for the NPTCPT finals this Saturday.
