Yates teachers and students are currently opposed to the new city curfew proposal, which will require that teens under the age of 17 report in the house by 10 p.m. on school nights and 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

In July, the Houston City Council introduced the proposal which would require teenagers to report in at 11 p.m. on weekends, and 10 p.m. on weekdays. The council is expected to vote later this fall on the ordinance.

However, faculty and students at Jack Yates High say such a measure is counter productive.

Chestlee Hunt, a senior at Yates, said the ordinance won’t work.

“Teenagers will find a way to get around it and be out after hours,” Hunt said.

However, some students see the value of the ordinance. Andrew Anderson, a freshman, said by restricting what time students come in, they will keep them out of trouble.

“The teen crime rate is on the rise and this will get troubled teens off the street and in the house safe,” Anderson said.

However, Mr. Joe Moon, a concerned Yates teacher and parent, disagrees with the time change. Mr. Moon said the curfew will be a problem for working students.

“I have students that work who will get off after 10pm on week nights and they will be charged when they’re doing nothing wrong,” Moon said.

Those who oppose the new curfew say the teen crime rate, teen pregnancy, and teen drug use will not be affected because teens will find a way to go out and commit crimes or have sex and do drugs.

Others that do agree say the violence drug use and sex rate will go down because teens will not have enough hours in the day to be to themselves and stay out late and do worng.

The curfew will also impact local businesses.

According to KHOU news.com, a few weeks ago the movie the theater banned anyone under 17 from watching a movie that starts after 9pm unless accompanied by a parent. Due to the fact that so much violence has taken place between teen who were under the age 17 and who were not accompanied by an adult. The web site also stated that the Houston City Council will vote this month on the time change.
