Senior David Lynch is a jack-of-all-trades. You may ask what the curly haired young man’s activities consist of? Varsity football, varsity baseball, the leading role in numerous plays, and the fan favorite for the up-coming Mr. Cleveland pageant, just to name a few. “I see my self as an all-around kind of guy,” Lynch had to say about his charisma.
During the fall season of the school year, Lynch holds down the left defensive end spot on this year’s Warriors football team. “Playing defensive end is awesome. I love hitting people. I play a little tight end on offense, but that doesn’t compare to defense,” he said.
Lynch just decided to come out for the 2005 fall campaign for his first year of football, then was skeptical about coming out again this year. “Everyone knows that last season was a tough one, but with the new league change this year, I figured we would have a good chance to win a few games,” Lynch said.
Lynch has the second most sacks on the team with four on the season. Not bad for a second year player.
“David is a big key for us,” head football coach Todd Pasche said. “He holds down the other defensive end spot which is a key for our defense. Last spring I remember he was not sure if he was going to play. We would have been in trouble if wouldn’t have come out. He is a solid defensive end and a good blocker at tight end. David epitomizes the kind of guy teams need to put you over the top. He’s not a superstar but is an excellent role player,” said Pasche.
Football is not Lynch’s ticket out of this town though. “Football is not something that I will look to pursue after high school, it’s just something that I have a lot of fun playing,” he said.
Yet high school will not be the end of the road for his sports career. “Right now I’m looking at either Lewis and Clark, or the University of Portland for college,” he said.
Last season in baseball Lynch finished with a record of 1-3 with an E.R.A of 6.82. “It was a down season for me, mostly because my elbow was bothering me most the season though. I have been throwing this fall to make sure it stays loose for the spring,” he said.
Lynch does not just plan on attending one of these universities, but playing his most skilled sport: baseball. “I plan on being our number one pitcher this spring.”
The Mr. Cleveland finalist has been a varsity baseball player since his sophomore year, and wants to go out on top. “I think we will win the PIL easily in baseball, and have a great shot at winning state.”
Lynch’s confidence does not stop with the team, but continues on his high beliefs of himself. “I plan on being first team all league at not only pitcher, but shortstop as well, which will be tough because I haven’t played short since Babe Ruth.” For the past two seasons Lynch has been a third basemen, but the depth at the position this year has made him want to try his hand at a new spot in the infield.
Yet it’s not his bone crushing hits at defensive end, or his corner-painting pitching, not even the gold glove style play in the field that makes Lynch unique. It is his love of acting. “I love acting, the feeling that I get before I go on stage is indescribable. I definitely feel more pressure before big plays than in sports. Mainly because sports come naturally to me, acting doesn’t, it is something that I really have to work at.”
“David is an athletic, physical actor,” commented Cleveland’s drama teacher Jane Ferguson. “Once he gets a handle on a character he goes all the way with it, which is a key aspect to the drama department.”
As soon as the football season is over Lynch will begin preparing for this winter’s One Act presentations. “It should be a lot of fun, Lynch had to say about acting. “Being on stage is a feeling that I can’t get anywhere else. It’s exciting playing something that your not, I have a lot of fun pretending to be someone, I let out my inner child.”
Acting is another thing that Lynch does not plan on stopping after his four years at Cleveland are over. “I see myself being involved in the drama program wherever I go to college.”
In the future though, Lynch is turning his thoughts to not only Cleveland’s first-ever state playoff game in football, but also the upcoming beauty pageant for a few senior men. “I see myself as the front runner for the Mr. Cleveland competition. I have a little competition in Donte Whitaker, and Will Reese. Donte’s dancing skills and Will’s serenading routine may land me in third place. I just know that it will be a lot of fun.”
Lynch should be the role model for all aspiring Cleveland high school students, not only well involved with schools sports, and drama programs Lynch is also focused on his academic career boasting a 4.0 weighted G.P.A, and is a participating member of the school’s National Honor Society. Lynch throws all the stereotypes out the window for not only athletes, and drama buffs, but for nerds as well.
