In England, football is life. No, not the game involving a pigskin, pads and helmets, but the one involving red cards and bicycle kicks. The game Americans call soccer is a way of life in England.

While Americans anticipate the Yankees-Red Sox matchup each postseason, fans in England await the one between teams like Manchester United and Arsenal. The English Premier League provides all the excitement of Major League Baseball and the National Football League.

The EPL, also known as the Barclays Premiership, consists of 20 teams. Each team plays one home match and one away match against each of the other teams, for a total of 38 league matches.

A team receives 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, and none for a loss. The team with the most points at the end of the season is declared champion of the Premiership.

Manchester United has been the most successful team, winning eight championships since the league's inception in 1992. Lately, a new power has risen. Arsenal, the league champions a year ago, held a 49-game unbeaten streak until it was spoiled by Manchester United Oct. 24.
