There
are nearly 1800 students at our school and over 350 of them are in choir. Some
changes have been made to make the choir programs run more smoothly. With 3
classes having over 90 students, one class over 15 students, one that has 29
students, and one class that has 37 students, it can get a little chaotic. Mr.
Curtis said in response “… cause it’s so massive and along with that it means
they have to give up more of themselves in order to make sure that the class
runs, cause when it’s a smaller group they can get off task and get back on
right away, and a larger group they get off task, it takes a lot longer to get
them all back.” With all of his classes Mr. Curtis likes to keep a “family like
atmosphere” and include everyone in the classes.
Three
major changes have been made to 3 of the choir’s. The Advanced Men’s choir has
gone from being an after school choir to having their class during the school
day. The Select Freshman and Select Treble is now one choir. This was done to
make room for the Advanced Men choir. In Mr. Curtis’s words “everything’s the
same as it’s always been.”
Choral
Edition, Advanced Men’s and Women’s, Select Treble, and Concert Choir are
working towards going to the Heritage Festival at Disneyland in Anaheim,
California this Spring Break. This year is the last year that Select Treble
will be traveling to Disney Land, but Mr. Curtis did say that they will try to
take them somewhere closer like Lagoon. The Disneyland trip is just one thing
exciting that is going in choir this year. The Canyon County Honor Choir
recently held auditions and 80 Vallivue students made it into the choir.
“The
main thing is that I hope that we can maintain the quality so that kids will
still want to take it [choir]” says Mr. Curtis. The quality of the choir in Mr.
Curtis’s words is “The choirs are big…but other than that as far as quality I
think they are very good.”
Have
you have ever wondered what made Mr. Curtis want to become a choir teacher. In
an Interview he told us “The first time I thought about teaching choir was when
I was in seventh grade…I was having a bad day, my voice was changing, and I
thought oh no I’m not gonna be able to sing anymore, and my choir teacher told
me that I needed to just be patient and stick it out, and then she said ‘I
could she you teaching choir someday.’ and that was the first time I ever
thought about it. And so then after that, I went if she thinks I can do it then
maybe I can do it and that’s where I went from there.”
Good
luck to the Choirs this year.
