For the most part, people are romantics fundamentally, and while many of them declare they do not beseech love, secretly they seek out for it daily. It is traditional for us to deem the idea of love as true, for it is how we were raised to think by parents, media, and everyday life, but what if I told you that it is not the, and there is an explanation for this thing called love?
Prior to the setting in of love, we experience infatuation. We undergo butterflies in our stomach, and occasionally our knees even begin to bear a resemblance to a bowl of pudding. Honestly, however; these “butterflies” mean nothing. An episode of butterflies is just our bodies going into a state of defense due to a great amount of stress caused by an excessive amount of dopamine that is released by the brain.
Dopamine is responsible for numerous emotions such as attraction, infatuation, and even the earliest stages of love. Dopamine is released naturally, and of moderate amounts permitting there is no one of significant attraction I the picture, but as soon as that occurs, the body will produce an excessive amount of dopamine creating a euphoria, which resembles one of a cocaine enhanced state, which causes people to become blind to logic.
As often observed; love dies. That too can be chemically explained. Just as a disproportionate amount of drugs over an extended duration of time creates a tolerance, that too happens in the case of dopamine. As the tolerance builds, love is observed to decline. At that point, another chemical called oxytocin is released. Oxytocin is the chemical that is responsible in enduring commitments, where exhilaration is no longer present. It is the drug that influences us to sense comfort with someone and introduces a state of belonging.
So you see, love isn’t a phenomenal miracle. It is really a chemical imbalance that causes us to attach to one another, and inspires us to reproduce. Now do you still believe in love?
