Photography is one of those classes that you take thinking, “Oh, well, this is going to be easy—I am not going to have to do anything but take pictures.” I was no different when I came into the class my sophomore year. Then, you find out that “oh crap, this is a time consuming class that takes a lot of thought and energy.”

The first day I walked into room E-163, it was a little unnerving to see all the equipment that we have to get…and get to use. Even more unnerving was the fact that I had to learn how to use the equipment and chemicals. Fortunately for me and the rest of the students at Blake, we have Kerri Blankenship as our photography teacher.

Though many students take photography thinking it is an easy and laid back class, they have another thing coming. It is quite possibly one of the most difficult (elective) classes I have ever taken, but the way that Ms. Blankenship teaches the class makes it extremely enjoyable.

Her knowledge of photography is possibly the greatest asset to the students in the class. Without even a second thought, she can look at your test strip and tell you what you need to do to improve the quality. Her knowledge helps her create exciting projects, thus making the class more enjoyable.

Through her eagerness to help solve any problem that might arise in the class, be it printing, camera issues or film trouble, her determination to do what it takes to make you succeed in the class is a breath of fresh air in a world of apathy towards learning.

One of the best things Ms. Blankenship does is that she tries to relate to her students. There is virtually nothing you cannot talk to her about. Whether that problem is personal or class related, she does everything she can to help you solve it.

Along with her availability and openness, she always reassures you of how well you are doing—well, to the best of her abilities without lying, making the work in the class that much better.

Thank you, Ms. Blankenship, for helping me to find something that I love, and a place for myself in high school.
