A surgery on Molly Meddock’s
back left a scar, but she
doesn’t remember a thing. Now
she is left to cope with the pain.
Meddock ‘12 was born with
a stenosis, where a joint was too
large and flattened a nerve in her
back that ran to her leg. The
problem amplified to an unbearable
level in basketball season.
On Feb. 14, Meddock went
into surgery to get the bone in
her joint cut away. After getting
a better look at it, the surgeons
had to shave off more than what
they originally had planned. At
first, guidance office secretary
Paige Mulka, reported that Meddock
had a lot of discomfort.
Coach Tim Rieman said Meddock
only played in three games
this year.
“Molly is a very enthusiastic
and a positive person...I’m really
disappointed she couldn’t play
this season,” said Rieman.
“When the nerve got really
bad, maybe a month ago, I just
accepted it, knowing that at that
point in time, soccer was more
important. I had been upset until
I knew that I needed stronger
treatment for the injury,” Meddock
said.
Now that the basketball
season is over,
Meddock is looking
forward to her
senior season as
the goalie for the
girls Varsity Soccer
team. The only
thing holding her
back is her injury.
“I should be
fully recovered
after spring break.
I think that my
surgery will allow
me to come back
strong and I will
fully recover,”
Meddock said.
The first day of
soccer try-outs was
March 12. Doctors
informed Meddock
that if she participated
in absolutely
no physical activity
for six weeks, they
would give her
the ‘okay’ to play.
If everything goes as planned,
Meddock will be standing in
the net by the third week of the
season, March 27.
“Meddock plays a huge role
on the team,” said Jordan Stefl
‘13.
“She helps lighten the mood,
she’s funny, and she’s our only
goalie,” said Stefl.
Even though she can’t wait
for Meddock to be on the team,
she doesn’t want her to rush her
recovery.
“She’s not helping anyone if
she’s not fully recovered,” Stefl
said. Both Stefl and Kaley Evans
‘13 agree that although they’ll
miss Meddock, the team will
be able to fill new roles and still
dominate.
