So what is a meme (pronunciation: rhymes with “team”)? The term “meme” originated from Richard Dawkin’s book “The Selfish Gene”, where it was defined as “a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation.” But what’s an internet meme? Many have probably seen a meme over the internet but don’t know what it actually is. A meme can be an image, video, phrase or idea that spreads from one person to another through the internet for what seems to be no significant reason at all. Memes usually have a viral effect and spread quickly through social networking websites. Still don’t get it? It’s almost like a big inside joke over the internet.
Here’s a list of popular internet memes:
- Forever Alone
- Rebecca Black – Friday
- Lolcats
- This is Sparta
- Rick Rolling
- Trollface
- “Y U NO” Guy
- Antoine Dodson
- I herd u like mudkipz
- Cool Story Bro
- 48÷2(9+3) = ?
- Fail/ Epic Fail
But the list doesn’t stop there; there are thousands more out there. Some of these memes are bound to sound familiar by now. Memes can end up being disastrous or profitable. Examples: Rebecca Black’s Friday may have gained worldwide fame but it has received a lot of negative criticism and is known as a “viral star”. On the other hand, Antoine Dodson gained success over Youtube and is now said to be filming a reality show featuring him and his family according to MSN.
Internet memes can be found all over the web especially on sites like Youtube.com or Tumblr.com. The reason for this is basically because they are websites that easily allow images, videos, phrases, jokes, ideas to go viral through things like sharing and re-blogging. So, be smart and know your meme. Cool Story, Bro.
