Brian Wood, a 33-year-old happily married and successful game designer, sacrificed his own life for his wife and their expected child.

“I remember knowing, like right then that he was gone, because there wasn’t anybody paying attention to him. And no one was helping him out of the car or talking to him, there was no movement over there,” his wife, Erin Wood said on the Today Show.

It was Friday, September 3rd on Highway 20 Whidbey Island, Vancouver. Brian and Erin Wood saw a swerving, out of control car coming across the centerline towards them. So Brian immediately reacted by quickly slamming on the brakes and veering right to take the full impact himself.

“That was the choice he made. To sacrifice himself to keep me and the baby safe because that’s just the kind of guy he was, always,” Erin said with tears in her eyes.

That Friday, Jordyn Weichert, 21, was driving with her friends Samantha R., Jacob Quistorf, and Francis Malloy in the Chevy Blazer that killed Brian Wood. While under the influence of drugs, and driving, Jordyn was trying to take off her sweater while Samantha was held the wheel; they lost control of the car, swerving across the centerline.

“They swerved right, grabbed the wheel making the car overreact and swerve far left until they were over the centerline,” said a police officer after the accident.

Erin described the moment, “I didn’t connect that it was actually happening.”

Brian’s mother, Janice added, “His first thought was for that baby, and his wife.”

As Brian quickly made the choice he did, the Chevy Blazer smashed into their Suburu Outback, killing the loving husband and father-to-be almost instantly.

“I would give anything, just to hug my husband one more time,” Erin replied, “He was very excited for this baby, and always just incredibly loving towards me.”

Jacob Quistorf and Francis Malloy were also killed due to this horrendous incident. In the Chevy Blazer that Jordyn was driving that night was found cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and a .25 caliber handgun.

The collision would have been head on, killing Erin and their child, if Brian had not of made the brave act he did.

“I’m trying to focus on the joy that we’ll have once this baby is born,” Erin also said, “It’s a reminder to everyone, to please just hug your family and love them and make sure that they know you care about them because I really would give anything just to see Brian and hug him one more time.”

The baby was checked on, and there were no medical complications. The baby is due in November.

Brian Wood will be forever remembered for his brave sacrifice for his wife and child.
