You may have noticed that there are many clubs around the school, which almost anyone can join. But why is it that there are so few active members in these clubs?

FFA, FBLA, FCCLA, Art, HOSA and many more are all clubs that you just don’t join by enrolling in a class. For example, a foreign language club, you are automatically a member when you are enrolled into the language class, which leaves all of the effort upon the teachers.

These other clubs that are not just automatic, takes effort from the students. That is a good thing; it teaches us how to think for ourselves and step up to the challenge of responsibility. This could help one prepare for later on in life.

Many of these clubs you learn great skills, such as how to write and give a speech, and dress professionally. Sports teams are also a good way to be involved in school and learn how to work with people.

Is it that students are scared of a challenge? Or is it that we just do not care? I think a lot of students do not care. Everyone is terrified of a challenge, but they do care about what is going on in the world, a lot of these clubs do great things for the community and can give an excellent experience.

We need to quit thinking, “OK, let’s just get through high school as quickly and painlessly as possible,” and just step up to the extra work because the real world is not going to let you get by doing as little as possible. Everybody would like to “make it big” after they graduate from high school, but how are you supposed to accomplish this when you have no experience in making a speech; that’s important to people who are critical.

Being involved in school clubs is a big thing, it makes people feel that they belong and they usually have a better high school experience with participation in these clubs.

Think of it this way: if you are involved in a club, it will look good on a college application, and it could be a fun and positive experience that would last a lifetime.
